Dale Blasingame is a senior lecturer in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas. He received a master’s degree in New Media from Texas State in 2011 and an undergraduate degree in journalism from Texas State (then Southwest Texas State) in 1999. Dale teaches MC3306 (Writing for Broadcast Media), MC1313 (Writing for Mass Media), MC4315 (Web Design and Publishing), MC1100D (Digital Entrepreneurship), MC4326 (Advanced Social Media and Analytics), MC4381 (Fundamentals of Digital and Online Media), MC4382Y (Mobile Storytelling in the Park) and MC1100E (Drone Journalism). His research has been published in the #ISOJ Journal, and he's a contributor to MediaShift, where he frequently writes about TV newsrooms and unique video on social media. Dale is a member of the Online News Association, Society of Professional Journalists and National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
Dale regularly attends the top conferences around the country regarding digital journalism. His first time at SXSWi was for a course in grad school in 2010, and he's hasn't missed one since. He also attends the Online News Association Conference each year, which features a collection of the top minds in areas like data journalism, programming and multi-media storytelling. In addition, Dale has twice presented at the International Symposium on Online Journalism at the University of Texas in Austin. He presented his thesis in 2011 and a paper he co-authored with Dr. Cindy Royal on data journalism in 2015.
Prior to teaching, Dale spent nine years as a producer at News 4 WOAI in San Antonio, Texas, where he won two Lone Star Emmy awards for Best Newscast in Texas and was nominated for a third. He was a newsroom leader in recognizing the advantages of social media for television stations. Before making the jump to television news, Dale was a news anchor and reporter for a radio station in San Antonio.
Outside of the classroom, Dale is the social media manager for Leadhub, an Internet marketing company in San Antonio, Texas. He manages social media and video production for clients across Texas and California.
In his off time, Dale likes to travel to state and national parks with his dog, Lucy, and hike. He recently finished visiting all 95 Texas state parks in one year, and he wrote for for each issue of Texas Parks and Wildlife Magazine in 2016. Dale was named one of the Extraordinary Texans of 2016 by Texas Highways Magazine and is a frequent contributor to the San Antonio Express-News Travel section. He is constantly planning his next trip. He's also working on a memoir about his travels. You can view his park photos on Instagram.
Dale is originally from Harlingen, Texas - near the Mexico border - and talks every day with his mom and dad.
